You guys know I am all about the salty air, but lately I’ve found myself daydreaming about the desert.
The mountains, wildlife, cactuses, constant sunshine, dusty blue skies, and barren terrain just gives me this grounded and connected feeling.
*insert the sounds of a chill desert playlist here*
My obsession with the desert started when my older sister booked this gorgeous Airbnb a couple years ago for my little sister’s bachelorette party in Palm Springs.
The view every morning was beyond incredible. Pics don’t even do it justice. We sipped coffee outside, had a fire going, and just enjoyed the quiet.
The energy in the desert is just different.
Being stuck at home for months inspired me to completely redecorate the house and it’s slowly becoming my little sanctuary. I have a ton of plants, a neutral decor situation, and Palo Santo and Sage smells flowing.
Which brings me to the topic of this post.
Palo Santo and Sage are two of MY FAVE scents. Burning them every day gives me that feeling of being back in Palm Springs, sipping on my coffee outside, while staring at the mountains.
Depending on my mood, I’ll grab either PS or sage, and wander around the house waving the smoke around my plants, each of my rooms, my dogs (when they let me), and of course myself.
I also recite an intention to really set the tone for the day and start my morning routine.
Ok, so let’s chat about the scent of PS.
If you’ve never smelled it, it has this light woodsy, with a tiny hint of citrus/sweetness aroma.
It’s the most amazing smell everrrrrr. You instantly feel more calm and present.
But, even better than the smell, are the benefits.
Palo Santo Benefits
+ Clears Negative Energy:
In the Shamanic history of South America, palo santo is said to remove negativity and obstacles and attract good fortune.
+ Can Relieve Headaches:
Dr. Isaac Alexis explains that smelling the oil or smudging a stick itself will help “release neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, while stimulating the release of endorphins and enkephalins, the body’s natural pain killers.”
(I diffuse Palo Santo essential oil and burn the sticks whenever
I’m feeling a little headache coming on)
+ Reduces Stress Levels:
Palo Santo purifies the air & contains antimicrobial properties. This can calm the nervous system, reducing feeling of anxiety, stress and creating a more positive mood.
+ Great For Helping Create A Daily Routine:
I haven’t had a consistent morning routine in…
Ok, like ever. But over the last couple of weeks, every day, I wake up, make a cup of detox tea, mist my plants, and light my Palo Santo or sage.
Then I read or journal, and I swear my days are better because of this.
So you see, PS is magical and EVERYONE should have the wood sticks or essential oil in their homes. I buy my sticks from this cute local shop near me and get the oil from Young Living.
Now onto my other faveity fave: Sage.
It’s thought that the phenolic compounds present in sage have an antioxidant effect and can reduce free radicals.
Salvere, the Latin word meaning “to heal” or “to save.”, is where sage gets its name. And several cultures, including the Egyptians, Romans, Greeks, and Indigenous people, have used sage for its medicinal and spiritual properties.
There are hundreds of types of sage, but the most common are garden, white, and even juniper sage.
“Garden sage, just regular old culinary sage, has been used historically for anxiety and depression, colds, digestive complaints, and more,” says Sarah Corbett, clinical herbalist at Rowan + Sage. “It’s a lovely hot, pungent, warming herb.”
Benefits Of Sage
+ Packed With Antioxidants:
The leaves are stacked with antioxidants that contain anti-inflammatory properties and help protect against free radicals.
(MUCH needed since there are a ton of pollutants in the air)
+ Sage Essential Oil Contains Antimicrobial Properties:
According to Sarah Corbett, “Research suggests sage essential oil can be an effective disinfectant against airborne microorganisms, can banish body odor when used as a deodorant, and can treat wounds and skin infections caused by staphylococcus.”
+ Boosts Mood & Can Improve Cognition:
Simply smelling/diffusing sage essential oil, or burning the herbs, it can instantly improve your mood & help with memory.
Between these two gems, your home will have nothing but purified air and good energy flowing through it. Not to mention, the amazing aroma you’ll be smelling 24/7.
Alright guys, off to replenish my diffuser with Palo Santo goodness!
